Museum Reviews
The Buffalo soldiers museum is completely amazing. Many years ago this building was the Houston light guard armory. I am in the light guard veterans association and the Buffalo soldiers make it possible for us to continue we hold our reunions there and I consider them my brothers and sisters
This was my first visit, the owners were there and they are a very pleasant couple. That's a portrait of the owners and me with one of them. I'm an Army Brat so this was endearing as I thought of my Dad's service.
The art collection was breathtaking, featuring both local and international artists. The temporary exhibition on ancient civilizations was fascinating and well-researched. The staff went out of their way to answer my questions and provide extra information. I also appreciated the quiet spaces for reflection. The café offered delicious snacks and a relaxing place to take a break. Overall, it was an enriching and memorable visit that I’d recommend to anyone.
The reenactment of the Buffalo Soldiers during the Juneteenth celebration was a powerful and memorable tribute. It was exceptionally well organized, historically informative, and emotionally moving—offering attendees a meaningful experience that honored the legacy of these brave African American military heroes with great dignity.☆☆☆☆☆
After watching a PBS program about the Buffalo Soldiers a couple of months ago which was extremely interesting, they mentioned the Buffalo Soldier Museum in another state and when I went to look for it on Google Maps this National Buffalo Soldier Museum here in Houston Texas also came up. The movie was educational and absolutely wonderful and a highly recommended it! And a visit to this Museum to learn more
This is a nice museum full of a lot of cool history! It was bigger than I anticipated and it took me about 2 hours to thoroughly view the various rooms. There is a QR code guests can scan to get more context as the content is set up to be a self-guided tour for non-groups. There were descriptions for artifacts in English and Spanish.
so much information, very entertaining and also interactive, for all age groups, staff very friendly and helpful
Pretty awesome history and pretty neat exhibits to check out! See how the military has evolved since then! Pretty awesome
The museum is great and can all be enjoyed in an hour or two. The staff and proud of where they work and love the museum. In addition to The Buffalo soldiers, there are a few exhibits that tell the story of Black history and the US Military. The conflict the Buffalo Soldiers had with Native Americans is not absent, nor is there a depth of the realities related to that conflict. I highly recommend this museum for remembering a part of history most people have forgotten.
Great museum. We attended a Father daughter dance here. Very nice establishment!
Great museum with so much history. A must visit attraction. Always organized, with helpful personnel to assist.
A must visit when in Houston. There is a lot of interesting history there. Salute to all the service men and women of African and indigenous descent. We've served honorably since the country's inception.
Buffalo Soldier National Museum is a national treasure as visitors will learn about the contributions of black servicemen and women to historic battles throughout American history. The museum also has beautiful spaces for hosting workshops, gatherings, or black-tie events. Captain Paul Matthews, the founder, is an very amicable host, and the staff is great!
It's best to go as early as possible if you like to read everything that interests you and still see everything else. They have a gift shop with some pretty cool looking jackets and shirts!
The BSBM is small but powerful. The history of Black Americans protecting this country since the beginning is amazing!
The historical pieces lack care, deterioration is observed in some of them. More signage is missing, hopefully in another language too. Souvenirs are limited, they should expand the offer. Friendly and attentive staff (5/5)
Very knowledgeable representatives, enjoyed walking through reading a lot of unknown history.
Great memorial to the original Buffalo Soldiers African American fighting soldiers‼️🥁🐎🤠
I wanted to love this museum because it’s such an untold part of history but I cannot give this place a 4 star or higher because it was very unorganized and lacked a good start and end point. I loved learning about local heroes and the rich history that the US has tried to hide but I believe for the entry fee to be worth it, a guided tour would work better.
Great place to take family and friends. Great black ⚫️ American history, so stop on by.
Amazing experience. To my grand children and they had a great time..
I have always wanted to visit the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. This place is a diamond in the rough. The exhibits are full of historical details. I plan on going back for a jacket. I want.
In an old armory building which was pretty cool to start with. Visited this museum instead of others in Houston to learn more about an area we had not explored in the past. Start off with the video to give you some context but spend some time in this room looking at the display cases as we found some of the best things here. Although some of the exhibits are undergoing renovation, it was definitely worth spending two hours there. Not sure small children would get much out of it.
My family and I received a warm welcome. The museum was well organized and offered a thorough glimpse into the Buffalo Soldiers as well as the history of blacks in the armed forces. There is even a section that pays tribute to African American trailblazing men and women in NASA. I would definitely recommend this museum if you are in the Houston area!
Great tribute to the black service men who fought all our military battles and were not fully recognized….Fascinating and important American history……
I was in Houston with my hubby for his business trip. I don't know anyone in Houston, but I made new friends at the Y. We made plans to visit this museum, but they bailed on me (it is okay...this was all last minute). Anyway... I went alone and had a FABUOUS time. The museum is inexpensive, yet rich with culture and historical information. One of my favorites was a letter from an ex-slave to his former master. It was HYSTERICALLY FUNNY!!! I will definitely visit again! I purchased everyone back home a gift, except for myself! LOL! I will go again, and the next time, I'm bringing my brother-in-law, who is a Buffalo soldier!!
I enjoyed the visit and was reminded of the service of African Americans to the United States Armed Forces. I was surprised that the museum was not better funded. However, the pride was palatable and many of the exhibits were surprising. I also liked the old armory building. The museum deserves more visitors and better funding in the future. (Just compare this museum with the Asian Culture Center just a few blocks away).
