Museum Reviews

It was amazing for MLK day! We did arts and crafts and my kids also enjoyed the orchestra.
Attended a Martin Luther King concert tribute here. Please note that the exhibits are all art exhibits by local California black artists. The museum should be renamed the California African American Art museum. Its very small and will take you less than an hour to see all of the exhibits. You can make a day of it by visiting the other 2 nearby museums. Best to take transit to get here. The E line Metro is about 3 blocks away.
I enjoyed my visit to the museum. They had 5 different exhibits. One that intrigued me was the exhibit dedicated to the trans community with names on pillars of many who were murdered and or committed suicide. It was a solemn experience.
Had a nice experience at the museum. If you enjoy a free history lesson in a clean, safe place that’s not crowded and will not take too long this is a good place to visit. The staff was extremely helpful and kind with loading of knowledge as well.
It was a very nice museum, but I do feel this museum could have more in it. That was my first time visiting and I was very sad that it doesn't have more in it.
Attended the CAAM summer nights event where they showcased exhibits, lined the street with food trucks vendors, had an exclusive beer garden, and live DJs and dancing. The event was filled with good vibes and multicultural diversity. And the museum is a must to visit regularly throughout the year to check out the changing exhibits. Its a must go.
Multiple Exhibits regarding Early Black Artist who were locked out of art opportunities by Racism and Hate. Transgender display of 90 Suicide Victims across 3 states memorial! very sad!
CAAM has a wonderful array of art exhibits as well as hands-on art making. Very roomy and welcoming. It’s an entire lesson about African American artists & culture. Visit the website to stay updated on new exhibits or after hour events.
The California African American Museum is a powerful and beautifully curated space that left a lasting impression on me and my partner for our date. Each exhibit is thoughtful, intentional, and rich with history, culture, and storytelling. I appreciated how the museum celebrates creativity while also honoring the resilience and contributions of the African American community. The layout is easy to navigate, the staff is welcoming, and the experience invites you to slow down and truly absorb the art and narratives presented. It’s a place that educates, inspires, and stays with you long after you leave. I’m grateful for the opportunity to visit and highly recommend it to anyone looking for depth, perspective, and meaningful connection through art and history.
Nice place to take young children to explore and learn about Black history.
Free entry and meaningful exhibits. Not too big, but well worth visiting. Staff was welcoming.
4.6 (1.3K)6/13 is white and he lives in FL. He's my ex boyfriend Chris. Just saying Google.
A great place in Exposition Park to learn about the African American community with temporary exhibits. It's free, so don't hesitate.
Meaningful, creative, stunning exhibits. We arrived about 6 pm, which worked in our favorite as the museum got very crowded by 7:30 pm.
Beautiful museum with interesting exhibits. My teenager really enjoyed this place
Not much about Black history, just a little bit. Mostly strange artwork display by black artists.Very dissappinted !!!
Perfect space for exhibitions, featuring well lit, large and open rooms. Shows change regularly. We saw Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, the George Washington Carver show, and the Simone Leigh retrospective when we were there. All strong, thought-provoking work. Friendly staff, FREE admission, large shared parking lot with museums and coliseum.
Just went to see the special exhibit on George Washington Carver. So much stuff about him I never knew. There is also an exhibit on the migration to California and the establishment of safe cities and communities.
Love the exhibits here highlighting notable artists and agreeing light on The state's history
Great museum. Totally underrated. Fantastic diversity of exhibitions.
Was expecting more but understand the museum is under construction. The G.W Carver exhibit was very thorough learned alot of new things. Enjoyed the Simone Leigh exhibit also.
Free and open to the public. Awesome exhibits such as the Simone Leigh exhibit.
Save then drive. Thank you to everyone who helped make my dreams come true
California African American MuseumThe design of the hall is quite shocking; the other exhibition halls are not too impressive, or there are some so-called art that I can't understand; what is shown in the photos is the entire museum! What a pity.
Excellent museum the staff were very attentive and answered most all of our questions. Great exhibit for families. Even with the construction going on it was a great experience
Always educational. Love curated passionate walk-throughs, panels discussions and self-care yoga.
The California African American Museum is one of the many museums placed within the USC campus area. This location primarily focuses on works or art and history that are integral to the experience of African Americans, as well as art created by those of that rich ancestry. The museum is large and spacious and is easy to navigate throughout. With an ever changing variety of different artists and histories to view. Definitely worth a trip to see.
Interesting and changing exhibits.Wheel chair available.Tours, films, and other programs.Love this place.
Love the museum . Brought my nieces and nephew . They were so delighted.they even made new friends learning about things they never knew before . The moderators and curators were wonderful . God bless you all .
I went over there in the Museum for the Site Trip of my History Class. When I went there the 5 gallery was closed for the constructional work. That's why I didn’t get chance to explore the whole Museum. The staff was good and friendly also.
This place was a breath of fresh air! Most African-American Museum‘s tend to focus on slavery and civil rights and highlight the same five or 10 people. This museum shows other aspects of African-American culture. One of then-current exhibits focuses on the evolution of Cross Colors, starting from its creation by Marcus Garvey and then moving to its Influence not only in hip-hop culture but it’s infiltration into popular culture, most notably popularized by Bruno Mars. Also, the museum has a research library. I didn’t get a chance to look around, but I am guessing they probably have some great resources that offer additional insights into African-American culture and the African-American experience.
Wonderful space, excellent staff. They are friendly and informative. The space hosts many free outside activities in addition to the installations. My family enjoys the Museum often.
You can really slow down here take it in. Beautiful art. Much needed historical truths. Very peaceful place and it's free. Exhibits change frequently. Parking is $12 but if you take the train it drops you off very close. Take a stroll is the rose gardens before or after make it a wonderful day.
