Museum Reviews
I had an incredible time at this museum and basically wept my way through all three floors of the beautifully curated art. Highly recommend.
Great museum with two fascinating exhibits when I visited - one about the closing of a Black owned beauty shop in Connecticut, and the other about the reaches of the diaspora into the cosmos. Particularly moving was the room dedicated to the multimodal works of M. Carmen Lane, a two-spirit African-American and Indigenous artist. The employees were knowledgeable about each of the works, and were all very friendly! I'm very glad I saw this on a list of museums and decided to visit with my little time in the city. A jewel in San Francisco.
Interesting place albeit probably on the wrong state. Not enough focus on black empowerment. Not enough black staff - it is hard to take seriously the rainbow colored white man with the ring in his nose talking about the black plight. Amazing art work. No tip jar.
I felt the total amount square footage was on the smaller side for a museum. Exhibits were interesting, beautiful, profound. I'd recommend checking their talks and tours in advance to make the most of the experience.
It's not a large museum, but it houses paintings by a few artists. The museum staff were very welcoming and patient. I had a wonderful impression of it.
This is a must in your discovery of African-American heritage. The artwork here is simply stunning, and fulfilling
The best museum I have ever been to hands down. Not because it’s a black museum but because the artistry is simply the most astonishing I have ever seen.
This place is closed for repairs but the website and google say it is open. This was a huge inconvenience and took away a lot of our time in the city today. Please update your website and google
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. They provided great recommendations for books to purchase. Can't wait to go back.
I was very excited to checkout MoAD and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! It was a roller coaster of emotions- from pure joy to deep empty sadness. I was honored to have the opportunity to observe such pure moments along this journey marked by such pain and also by extraordinary resilience, culture, community, achievement, and joy. I simply can’t say enough wonderful words. I recommend MoAD to everyone I know coming to SF. Please don’t miss this experience!
We love visiting this place from Stockton! Amtrak to BART and a short walk later and we arrive. The entire experience from arriving to exploring the well curated exhibits is a sure day of adventure and learning for our homeschool family. Kids 12 and under are free and educators get in for $7! Plus SFMoMA us right around the corner and Yerba Buena Gardens has a cute little kids area to blow off some steam and maybe even bowl if time allows.
We were here during the family weekend and did the curated walking tour. I loved the way the museum is speaking to the current atmosphere, and to a specific audience. Such a gem.
I absolutely loved this museum! So clean, what a friendly staff, beautiful exhibit (went to see the Liberatory Living exhibit) and loved it so much!! I also love the community space!
Looking back to understand the present. This museum offers a glimpse of how the African Diaspora shaped the world.
Very cool museum. One if my favorites in the city because IMHO it is the perfect size to spend about 45 mins to 1 hour, not get overwhelmed, but still learn a lot. The exhibits are varied and have multimedia, sculpture, paintings, and more. The quality of the information on display is also quite high. One main description and no repetition when it's the same artist later along is something I appreciate in a museum. The current exhibit Liberatory Living: Protective Interiors and Radical Black Joy with mostly interior decor is fantastic. An important message. The gift shop is also well curated. So excited to own a Shiela Bridges art piece for my own home!
This is a pretty cool museum for art exhibits from artists with African heritage! A lot of the artists use their art as a medium to communicate so many things! Some are fun, some are thought-provoking, some are reflective, some are a window into the artists’ heritage. I really loved walking through the museum and reading about each art work.I enjoyed the paintings by Rachel Jones, the art pieces of Scott Johnson (bold and beautiful stone carvings) and Morel Doucet (delicate and gorgeous)!
Nice little museum. Only took an hour to take our time walking through. My kids loved the licorice exhibit.
Loved. I hope it can be bigger. There was a licorice exhibit were you could taste each kind from different countries and it was such a different art experience then I've had before. Other art equally emersive and stunning.Small area to create your own art as well.Note: no gender neutral bathrooms.
I visited here to paticipate to celebration of life for my uncle. It was very nice, heartwarmig ceremony. The exhibits are modern, unique, and interesting.
Free admission on Second Saturdays. Friendly staff. Great exhibits on the commodification of black culture. My biggest surprise was a licorice tasting room.
Most exhibits are cool, but the museum should raise its standards. Black squares? Jars of candy? Golden balls glued to the wall? I thought this museum is supposed to show that black people can be artistically gifted too, but such things achieve the opposite.
The exhibits were beautiful. The atmosphere was very chill. We had a delightful experience.
One of my favorite museums ever. There is such a wide range of aesthetic forms and I love how the museum feels both intimate and expansive. It's a true San Francisco gem, and one of those museums I wish I could spend forever in.
Recently reopened with new exhibition Joe Sam. It was nicely set up and presented. Several floors (stairs or elevator available) and different viewing places such as a mini theater and music/projection on the wall. Teen local artists' works were displayed, giving young artists a great opportunity and showcasing. You also have the opportunity to express yourself and artistic talent with a hands-on activity area and reading books. Great for adults and children. You will leave inspired! There is also a small book shop with lots of options for purchase. Free lockers to lock your belongs while visiting.
