D.L. Hughley, comedian, and actor is living proof that it is possible to turn your life around and provide a better future for yourself and your family. On Jan. 31, he told “Sherri” that despite having only a GED, Hughley has paid for every member of his family to go to college – an inspiring journey that shows the power of hard work and persistence in the face of adversity.
D.L.’s Struggles Before Finding Success
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, the famed actor was dismissed from high school and later worked at the Los Angeles Times in the telemarketing department prior to comedy. “The Kings of Comedy” alum jokingly admitted that hanging with his friends who are not well off is okay because pays for them as a result of his success.
Another joke he dished was at his wife, LaDonna Hughley, on her disappointment that he purchased a life insurance policy for himself but not her,
“She got mad ’cause I didn’t get life insurance on her, and I’m like, ‘Well, you don’t work,’ he said. “We ain’t have to move or nothin’ like that. The kids are gonna get a Puerto Rican stepmother.”
After mentioning that his wife most recently obtained her second master’s degree, Hughley said,
“Every member of my family, I paid for them to go to college, and I have a GED. … I’m very proud of them, but they’re arrogant. … But I am the only one working, like, if I leave, this whole place would get dark,” he joked. “It’s hard to see your degree on the wall with your lights off.”
Despite having only a GED, D.L. decided to make it possible for every member of his family to attend college. He worked tirelessly to pay the tuition fees and said,
“I was determined that no matter what I had to do or no matter where I had to go, every one of my family was going to college.”
Eventually, through hard work and determination, he achieved his goal and every person in his family went on to pursue higher education as a result.
