The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has officially recast the role of General “Thunderbolt” Ross with legendary actor, Harrison Ford.

The Indiana Jones star replaces the late William Hurt, who passed earlier this year from prostate cancer. Marvel Studios broke the news earlier today after rumors of Harrison’s consideration for the role were stirring last week.
Who Is “Thunderbolt” Ross and The Red Hulk?

In the comics and MCU, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is not only a general in the United States’ Army, but a frequent enemy of The Hulk and the father of his primary love interest, Betty Ross. The Hulk has a lot of enemies but few can hurt him personally the way Ross does–or hates him as much. Ross even goes so far as to undergo an experiment that results in him becoming The Red Hulk!
As The Red Hulk, Ross looks like a red version of The Green Avenger, but unlike him his strength does not increase to the same levels of the original Hulk, he retains his intelligence (similar to She-Hulk), will use weapons, and is a brilliant tactician. However, he does generate intense heat the angrier he gets. Ross, as The Red Hulk, also can absorb vast amounts of energy to increase his strength, possesses a healing factor, is invulnerable, and is virtually indestructible.
What does the MCU have in store for Harrison Ford and “Thunderbolt” Ross?

The Red Hulk development seems to be where the MCU will head with Harrison as the character. Recently, more Hulk-centered villains and characters have begun to appear and reappear in the MCU; like She-Hulk and The Abomination; the former in her own Disney +/Marvel Studios’ series. The latter appears there too, and has also made appearances in Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, and is set to appear in the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts. The Hulk villain, The Leader, is set to return in the next Captain America film, Captain America: New World Order.
It is rumored the new Thunderbolts movie will somehow be related to Ross. In his campaign to destroy and defame The Hulk he may be the culprit behind gathering the former villains and antiheroes that will comprise the Thunderbolts’ team roster.
We are excited to see Harrison Ford on board! He is no stranger to action or sci-fi films being a mainstay of Indiana Jones and Han Solo in the various Star Wars movies. What do you think of Marvel Studios’ casting decision? Sound off in the comments below!
