Since Discovery’s takeover of Warner Bros.,Warner Bros., The DC Comics’ properties belonging to the latter have all gone on a complete pause, cancellation, or overhaul.
In a surprising turn of events HBO Max has announced its highly anticipated Green Lantern series will now shift focus to the African-American Green Lantern, John Stewart.
Who are the Green Lanterns?
The Green Lanterns are a corp of intergalactic officers in DC Comics tasked with keeping the universe safe. There are literally thousands of them, and each is designated a sector of the universe to watch over. Each Green Lantern is granted a Power Ring recharged by a green lantern-like device, fueled by a special kind of willpower, capable of doing anything the wielder can imagine, including flight, protection in space, energy blasts, and creating constructs out of solidified green light.
Earth has had a number of humans chosen to become Green Lanterns. All of them have have at some point been members of The Justice League.
Who is Green Lantern John Stewart?
The Green Lantern series has been in development since 2019 and was initially centered on two Green Lanterns from Earth, Alan Scott and Hal Jordan. However, as aforementioned that has changed to focusing on John Stewart.
John Stewart is the fourth human and first African-American to become a Green Lantern. He is also the second Black superhero to debut in DC Comics. He was created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams, first appearing in Green Lantern #87. (December 1971/January 1972).
John hailed from a crime ridden neighborhood which he later escaped by joining the military. However, his time in the military left him with PTSD. As a Green Lantern, he is currently their most powerful member, and has defeated iconic villains like Sinestro, Atrocitus and The Red Lantern Corps, Cheshire, Krona, and Nekron. The character also rose to fame during the early 2000s thanks to The Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series produced by Bruce Timm.
What will new Green Lantern series be about?
via Deadline
Written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Grahame-Smith, the original premise for the series reinvented the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott (Irvine), and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner (Wittrock) and half-alien Bree Jarta.
The new storyline, while based on John Stewart, remains unknown. However, we are hoping it will show his ascension to near godhood as a cosmically powered Green Lantern, who unlike the other members of the corps, is empowered directly from the source of Green Lantern energy. This also puts him on track to becoming stronger than Superman!
