During a recent interview, Kevin Feige, the head operator over Marvel Studios gave details as to why he and director Ryan Coogler decided not to recast a new actor to occupy the role of T’Challa for the film’s sequel.
Feige said,
“It just felt like it was much too soon to recast. Stan Lee always said that Marvel represents the world outside your window.”
He added,
“And we had talked about how, as extraordinary and fantastical as our characters and stories are, there’s a relatable and human element to everything we do. The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan poured that into the story.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, the director, Ryan Cookgler started working on the sequel after the film debuted in 2018 and spoke about going back to the film post-Boseman’s untimely death,
“I had to find a way that I felt like I could keep going and a way that our Black Panther family could keep going.”
He added,
“I started to come up with a film that had elements of the film that we had just finished writing, but also applied the themes that the people who were hurting just as much as me could actually perform and execute and come out on the other side whole.”
The film will see a first-time appearance for comic character and antagonist Namor and a second-time showcase for IronMan’s protege, RiRi Williams.
Marvel fans were saddened to learn about Boseman’s death given the huge success the film received. Chadwick not only led the film but also made appearances in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and 2019’s Avenger’s Endgame much to fan delight.
In 2020, Boseman died after battling cancer at only 43 years old. As previously reported by 360:
