Museum Reviews

Compared to other African American Museums in the United States this one lacks educational value to empower you. It's definitely due for an upgrade. We have so much history in Dallas not reflected in this museum. The staff are rude and expect donations which really ruins the experience.
I visited while in town for a few days and came all the way from SMU campus to see the African American Museum of Dallas. It was well worth the commute. Specifically, "Facing the Rising Sun: Freedman's Cemetery" was a perfect way to encapsulate the life of the Black community in Dallas. I learned so much and the exhibit was thoughtfully curated. I would highly recommend making it out to the museum whether you're a tourist or a local.
I personally think this is a must-go spots whenever you stay in Dallas! Get to know a great deal of African American history and culture especially in freeman town and north Dallas communities. Free entry fee and free parking,, we had a great time visiting this place! highly recommended
Great exhibits. I especially learned a lot fromseeing the Freeman's exhibits. The temporary Clementine Hunter exhibit was the reason for our visit. We enjoyed her paintings and learning more about her story. All of these exhibits were a reminder of what our ancestors endured and in spite of the struggles, I enjoyed seeing the elements of success. The gentleman that greeted us was very inviting and did a great job explaining the layout. Entry is free though donations can be made by scanning a QR code at the front desk. In this environment, organizations like this need support more than ever.
A museum with lovely staff and rotating exhibitions. There are numerous exhibition rooms all packed with lots of history and information. The highlight of our trip was seeing a collection of paintings by Clementine Hunter.
It is a well curated museum that gives an introspective look at African American History from Dallas and the country at large. From exhibits to art works it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.
A warm welcome and a pleasant visit to some beautiful exhibitions.
Awesome experience to see some of the art and history of our ancestors.
The African American Museum provides space to celebrate its local authors.
The first time I visited the Musem in 2021 it was awesome..I'm not sure why they took all the photos of our peoples accomplishments out. That should be the main focus. Motown, and all of our inventions and attributes. The photos they currently have in the exhibit do no justice to us a People. It needs to go back to how it was in 2021. I was very disappointed this visit.
Very nice, staff very informative. Lots of history of segregated history of Dallas
Great place to visit. Just cuz it looks closed doesn't mean it is, thats just how it looks.
When we went it was during construction only had like 1 room that you could go in. I'll go back next time when im in Dallas and update my review
Absolutely an unforgettable experience! Left a great impression on me and my family with all the exhibits and artifacts.
It's a lovely facility -I got married here 24 years ago and we would like to rent it out for our 25th anniversary next year. Been trying to get SOMEONE to respond to numerous emails and phone calls requesting reservation information. Been trying to get a response for THREE WEEKS. The one redeeming value is the quality of the current exhibition upstairs. It's EXCEPTIONAL!!! The museum store had some cool jewelry and we bought a few pieces. But somebody needs to get on the ball over there!!! Customer service isn't that hard.
#SWtop5museumDFW #lifehackTravelDFW a moving educational experience, and they have exciting programming. #BLM and AsianLM- the 2 are tightly linked in American hx, especially from the 1970's ff.
This is a nice museum but it needs to be updated. The AC was barely working on a day when temps were in the 90s. The museum store was sad and didn't have any souvenirs related to the art on display.
Great collection of art and historical works at the African American Museum.
All the exhibits were beautiful. It was very clean and well taken care of. I would diffantly visit again.
This place is absolutely amazing, I think it is a must for everyone that want to know the history behind this great nation, I learned things the African American Museum of Dallas that I had never known b4. This place is a must for every American, regardless of your political views.
Some of the most beautiful Art I've seen in a long time.I wanted to buy a lot of the art, but it's not that type of party.
It used to be bypasses through sacred sites and burial grounds. Now it’s delete buttons from museums, national parks, Arlington cemetery, and federally funded curriculum. This history is prescient!!!Thank you for preserving American History!!!I went to Freedman’s cemetery first, and was glad that SOME headstones had been preserved when I saw them here.Liberty and justice for all!
Great location for hosting social events! It provides a very unique experience! Fairly easy load in for your vendors! We love delivering chairs to this location!
If you're already in Dallas you should go but I would not suggest planning an entire trip around it.
Excellent museum showcasing African American History, especially from a lens of the Dallas Fort Worth Texas area.
It experience was absolutely amazing, the staff was informative and very friendly..
Super interesting. Great “folk” art collection downstairs and 3 - 4 special exhibits upstairs. Recommended if you are interested in Black history in Texas.
My brother used this as the venue for his wedding reception such a beautiful place..
Very informative on many levels, so much to read, view, and educate yourself on.
Went in at the state fair, my mother needed the restroom. However we did exhibit, and it was amazing, our stories be shared was beautiful.
Beautiful space, inviting staff and educational. Would recommend checking it out.
Beautiful history, thank you to everyone who helped to establish this wonderful facility!
Excellent atmosphere and knowledgeable people to assist if you have questionsLove it
What it lacks in interactive experiences, it gains with having orators to tell the stories of times of old. They bring the stories to life with first hand accounts. The artwork is breathtaking. My favorite part was reading the biographies of former slaves.
It was a great experience to learn about the history of black folks in Dallas. Not just images but interviews with some locals that have lived in the area & involved with keeping the story alive. I took my 2 teenage children & they enjoyed ut as well. I can appreciate the fact that admission is free, that gives us all an opportunity to learn about part of our history.
It is absolutely fascinating. The history of African Americans in Dallas from so many different perspectives made the visit both interesting and very educational. School field trips should be led here and the Holocaust and Human Rights Museum to give children of all ages a glimpse into the lives of different cultures that might make them more accepting of others.
This museum is such an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. You learn so many things and there are so many artifacts. I can't wait to go back!
Great experience for the family. Rich culture and knowledge of history.
Beautiful atmosphere, scenery, my new favorite go to on a nice Saturday morning.
It was so hot... I felt like I was about to pass out... It's full of pictures and pictures no story telling... It was pretty boring.
I try to visit several times a year because they switch up their exhibits. Always a nice time! Free entry, so I try to make a donation on my way out and buy a little something from the gift shop. No food or drink is allowed and lastly, don't touch the art or any other objects. I've gone with people who like to put their paws on everything, don't be that person, respectfully. Peace and blessings to the readers of this review.
Nice museum with exhibits that include African American art, music, literary, and culture. This location has a level dedicated to education that includes personal libraries, classrooms, and a theater. When I visited, a 45-50 min film showed about the African diaspora.
Great displays and a refreshing emphasis on local Dallas people and happenings.
I enjoyed it! Very educational! Donate $10 to help keep the museum open and educating for years to come!
This is an amazing museum. All African Americans should visit and take time out to read the articles they have in each section. I went on Saturday the 9th and they had just opened a new exhibit that day. It was small but nice and clean. The other exhibits were more in depth and informative. They had an event going on outside as well which was nice. They had activities for children as well. The gift shop is beautiful. I took a picture in front of the “Black Queens” grass wall and I Waldo purchased a mug, notebook and zip pouch. I will be back and hopefully there will be another event going on when I visit again. The gentleman at the entrance was very informative and professional as well. The restrooms need a lot of work as far as cleaning and being kept up.
A little disappointing. Not what I expected as far as artifacts that were displayed or artwork. There were a lot of paper posters. There were two or three cool things thus the three stars. But it is a free museum so you get what you pay for so to speak.
It’s a free entry museum, have good collection to look around and well maintained. Children’s area is great. The staff welcomed us and gave us a quick introduction about the museum. No drinks or food allowed , has an elevator if needing . And parking can be done just outside for free but do not park at special events parking area . Rest enjoy , the average time u can spend is 2 hrs .
What a gem! Beautiful artwork. The entire museum is beautiful. We really didn’t know what to expect, but this place was amazing. There’s a ton of historical stories. It’s worth your time!
