Its a very nice place to learn about some history of Black History and Culture
I followed a tour (not mine) and they started upstairs. Don't do that. Start 3 stories down. Makes more sense and reads better. I will go back.
If you get a chance to go, realize the whole museum cannot be experienced in a single visit. Plan out your stops and then plan to come back and see what you missed
Literally one of the greatest sites of cultural preservation in America
You have got to go and visit this museum. It's amazing and make sure you have on comfortable shoes. It's a lot of walking. Tickets are free when you request them on line.
Really hope the current administration doesn’t remove telling exhibits of this country’s past
Filled with so much information and laid out amazingly. So many artifacts filled with incredible history. If you are anything like me and like to read EVERY picture and plaque, you will easily need about 6-7 hours to fully immerse yourself in the entire museum. I spent about 3 hours and only made it 1.5 floors.
So much wonderful information. We'll kept. Could spend hours there touring the place.
Don't walk, run to this museum. I recommend two days to be able to take it all in. Very moving and full of details - a serious historical education, from arts and entertainment, to politics, to the struggle, contemporary times, and everything in between. An excellent representation of what it means/has meant to be Black/ African American in America. Oh there's also a cafe and great gift shop. She'd tears, eat, spend your money. Entry is free but you must register for tix online.

One of the best history museums I had the chance to encounter. Imagine knowing nothing about history and a wannabe dictator wants to come in to change it in a way that suits him --but I digress.
This museum tells a story about African Americans from slavery through how they helped shape America into what it is today!
This was an eye opening place I highly recommend going if you ever in DC
It is very hard to have the right words for this museum, but it was very moving. If anyone needs to learn about the African American experience in the United States, they need to come here.
Visceral, came out my visit with a solid sense of culture/community/identity that filled a longing in my life that I never thought could be filled ... highly recommend taking time out for this moving experience.
Great experience for myself and the youth who attended the tour with us. It is filled with history and it is very humbling to see how far African Americans have come as well as our contributions to the world as a whole.
What an amazing review of the history of slavery in our country. One can not cover and comprehend all that the museum has to offer in one day, it is simply overwhelming.
It was a wonderful experience that All people should have. You will have a better understanding of the African American race in the United States.
I've been here multiple times and cannot recommend it enough. You can easily book free tickets in advance. A fantastic museum.
I started from the bottom floor and worked my way to the top. The journey was emotional, thought provoking, and more. Well worth the time, I recommend this visit to everyone.
Make sure you have plenty of time. We stayed 3 hours and still couldn't see everything.
Just have to reserve tickets for a dollar each head at this museum. Most other smithsonians are 100 percent free.
We had a great time. The exhibits are excellent and beautiful. Well, wort the visit. Kid friendly and great for large group of people. Food courts and plenty of restrooms are easily accessible. Parking is an overall headache, and I would recommend taking one of the many busses or alternatives such as the guided tours. If you're on a budget, good luck with the traffic.
HIGHLY recommend!! This place is beautiful inside and out! It's huge. There are 6 floors and we only completed 2 in about 3 hours. There's so much valuable information and I learned so much.
The museum is very interesting. I like the architecture of the building. We waited for about only ten minutes. It was very crowded inside. We had 12:30 pm tickets. I have only been on the one floor, the ground floor. You definitely need about three days or so.
Start at the bottom with the history and work your way up...amazing amount of information and stories along with artifacts and art. Sobering and fabulous in turn. Cafe has good food. Plan to spend several hours if you can.
Excellent material presentation but insufficient seating certainly in the C display areas.
i loved this museum it really exhibited of all african american history. i learned so much. it is nicely set up and has several floors of solid history. i would definitely visit again.
This magnificent museum can be a bit overwhelming! I am a New Yorker who has visited twice in the last 2 years for about an hour or so at a time. I like to read every bit of information that is posted by the exhibits. Unfortunately, so do hundreds of other people. The crowds are a bit off putting! It’s difficult to get near some displays and when you do, there are other people breathing down your neck! On my last visit, May 23rd at 3:00, there were HUNDREDS of smelly adolescents everywhere! Some well behaved and some not so much! As a retired teacher, my tolerance level for the youthful hijinks of young folks that aren’t learning, but just “hanging out”, is extremely limited! However, even with this nuisance, I’d still continue to visit this museum that was a long time coming and will continue to be of great historical importance to Americans and the world!
Very informative and enjoyable experience. Make sure you give yourself the entire day to see everything. Lots of walking and standing. Also best to take the Metro there. No place to park.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. I enjoyed visiting the museum. It was not only educational but it was a reminder of where we are as a nation and where we are headed. I learned alot about history some pretty and some not so pretty. The museum had a restaurant and the food is delicious. Be prepared to spend 3-6 hours if you plan to see the entire museum in one day. Wear comfy shoes and clothing. The lines can get pretty long. There are interactive activities to get you engaged. The staff was very nice

You can easily spend a full day going through this museum, it's packed with information and history, the exhibits are well placed and diverse, this is definitely a must visit for any American.
The place was quiet and cool. Great place to spend time and protect yourself from the heat on a sunny day
Magnificent and inspiring. Long overdue as it displays not only the horrendous hardships the African American people had (has) to go through, but also the awesome accomplishments and true heart of the people. Also loved the food they served at the cafe!
We've been wanting to visit this museum for years. We finally got to tour it this weekend. Wonderful exhibits, full of detail, very moving. The video presentations throughout the various sections were so informative and interesting. We spent a few hours but still couldn't take it all in. Will need to return soon.
Profoundly important. Lots of treasures that enrich our understanding of our real history. Provocative but also moving. Great for all including kids of all ages.
Absolutely amazing! This is a must see - I would highly recommend for youth and adults. I wouldn't take young children as the exhibits are more suited for older children, 10+. Provides a well rounded interactive journeyof the full African American experience. I would recommend 5-6 hrs to take in everything without having to rush. I also recommend starting at the top and working your way down. Although you will be moving backwards in time, the lower level was easy too congested in the am whereas in the afternoon you could walk seine more freely and engage with the content better.
Another crowd favorite in DC this is a must stop on your visit because so many culture exhibits to see. The historical significant items on display for public education is easy to be immersed in the interactive experiences. The museum staff is incredibly helpful, friendly and goes beyond the call of duty for each visitor experience. Time tickets are required for entry online inadvance.
This was one of the highlights of our vacation! This place is absolutely amazing and rich with history. I was amazed with the pieces of African American all in one place and it was also a teaching experience for my young sons. They got a chance to see all aspects of our culture and where they descend from. Please if you’re in Washington D.C. make it a point to visit!
It is a museum you must visit. Thorough story telling in the main galleries of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans and their ancestors. Definitely not a light exhibit, but one that is extremely important for all of us to learn about, regardless of whether you are a visitor or resident of the US.My DC friends informed me that you need to reserve a ticket and they book out quite quickly so I took what I can. In hindsight I would've book a ticket (FREE) for earlier in the day, because there were the other galleries I wish to spend more time in - especially the Music gallery up in level 3. I caught a few things in the closing moments of the museum. Would definitely visit again, if I was ever in DC again.P.S. it is definitely a museum you can easily spend half (if not the whole) day at - if you want to digest everything thoroughly. There is a line at the entrance of the main galleries after you enter the museum building and that can take a little longer.
First time here and this is an amazing space! You know a lot of these things but here you see it more in depth. Things they don't go into in general educational society. I see why people say you need multiple days to conquer it all because I don't think we even got through a fourth of it.It's informational yet somewhat heartbreaking at the same time.Definitely a great space for those that don't know and want to learn so that we don't repeat this history. At the same time it's empowering to know that we as a people have come so far!#MrJustAskJoe
