Museum Reviews

This is the best museum I’ve been to in my life. It is extraordinarily well designed and tells stories all Americans should learn. I can’t recommend this museum enough.
So incredibly moving to see. Such a mixed plethora of mixed emotions. Sadness, pain and anguish. Beautifully displayed to those of us who did not experience this time and want to learn to educate ourselves and others.Second time visiting and even more amazing and powerful than before. As we learn about our family heritage we discovered more. Such a monumental experience.
The most powerful museum I have ever experienced. I brought a group of high school students after we read Just Mercy as a class. Every one of them has remarked that our experience with the Legacy sites was the most impactful part of our trip.
This museum is exceptionally well done—a beautiful, thoughtful, and deeply moving homage to the painful history of African Americans and slavery. The exhibits are powerful and unflinching, and they will move you to tears. Every section feels intentional, well-organized, and carefully curated, allowing the stories to be told with the gravity and respect they deserve. The experience can be emotionally heavy, and I strongly recommend taking breaks as you move through the exhibits. There is so much to absorb, both visually and emotionally. For the price, the value is incredible, especially with transportation provided to the additional locations.Be mindful that security screening is thorough—avoid bringing unnecessary personal items, and note that outside food is not allowed. This is not just a museum visit; it’s an emotional journey that stays with you long after you leave. I highly recommend it for anyone willing to reflect, learn, and feel.
If you’re interested in Black history, you must visit this place. It is very well organized.
Everyone should visit. So necessary and history that is never taught. Extremely emotional
The best historical museum I've ever visited!!! It is in three separate areas. An also includes a boat ride to an amazing sculpture park. Mind blowing and enlightenment experience every American should see!!!
A wonderful mix of primary sources, artifacts, and art. Sad, gut wrenching exhibits but wholly necessary. The ghost stories and the many first hand accounts were amazing. Lots of multimedia and interactive displays. Highly recommend.
The most powerful, well thought-out museum I've ever visited. The way they present the information in a variety of ways, depending on the different ways in which people learn... the artistry used throughout the exhibits... the innovative and interactive exhibits. This place should be required of all high schoolers, all elected officials, all people in this country. It tells our REAL history. Bravo, EJI.
Beyond words. Brutal. Emotional. Moving. And now more than ever necessary.
It is a must see. You cannot come to Montgomery and not visit the museum, garden and memorial. You'd be robbing yourself of such a powerful, and necessary experience.
This isn't just a museum. This is an expierence. It really tries its best to take you through the beginning before American Slavery started til today. Lots of actual artifacts as well as lots of art work and stories. Due to this pictures and cameras are not allowed inside the museum. Would highly recommend you go to this experience if you're in town.
Forget the Washington D.C. museum…If you want to see the most realistic history of what transpired in the U.S. without the glitz and glam of Oprah/Beyoncé/Tyler Perry/& The Obamas (respectfully)…then this is the place to go. I recommend this to everyone with melanin. Must see before 47 attempts to get rid of it!!!!!No cameras/filming allowed inside…with good reason. If you are reading this…please go & support. You won’t regret it.
The Legacy Museum was FANTASTIC, AMAZING, and WELL KEPT!!! The Legacy Museum was very informative, something for all to see. We will definitely go back again. I told family and friends all about it.
What a beautiful tribute.I recommend everyone experience this museum.
This is a wonderful Black History museum that I would recommend highly. It is a very inspiring insight into the past
First time reality about slavery and how it shaped the USA. Eye opening, insightful and humbling. An absolute must see for everyone.
Absolutely wonderful museum. A must if visiting Montgomery. wonderful employees too. Horrible but important history.
Thought provoking. Powerful. No photos allowed take paper and pen to write down powerful quotes.
Visiting this museum was such an impactful experience. It is the most well done museum that my husband and I have ever been to.
This museum is very well done and has a wealth of information inside. You need more than one day in the museum. There is an option to add the lynching memorial, sculpture memorial park, and a boat experience. I highly recommend doing all four but over at least 2 days to give yourself time to process. They do not allow pictures in the museum and at most of the sculpture park.
If you want to know black history indebt please come to the Legacy. You will not be disappointed.
Amazing museum, harrowing, honest and informative, we had 2 1/2 hours in the museum alone but could have spent longer. There are 3 main sites all included in the $5.50 entrance fee so great value too.I highly recommend that you visit if you have any interest in social history.
We had to leave before we were ready because we wanted to visit all three sites. This museum is very well done. One of the best I have visited. Be prepared to take your time to read the exhibits and watch a wide variety of videos and interactive exhibits. There is a lot information to process and reflect on.
Never have I ever learned so much! Sad as well as uplifting to see what’s been done to us in this country, how we’ve survived and flourished despite all attempts to erase us and our history. This is a very POWERFUL space! Take your time and take it all in. It will give you strength! Thank you Bryan Stevenson for your vision.
The content is definitely heavy but if you have not been there yet, I highly suggest you go. You will learn so much about the history of racism. Plan on spending a while inside as there are interactive exhibits and very good videos. Leave your phone in the car and just take it all in (you can't take pics anyway)
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I have visited The Legacy Museum three times with a different group of family members. I always learn something new, as I walk back in time. The best and most memorable visit was with my mom. She told my brother, her grandchildren, great-grandchild and myself about her younger years when she picked cotton in Choctaw County, Al and the injustice that she dealt with as a young adult. It's a great educational experience for EVERY PERSON.
Such a wonderful place to visit and learn the heartbreaking story of blacks in America, from the first slave traders to George Floyd.
This place is wonderful! The interaction and information is amazing. The experience is worth way more than the price you pay! You get to visit 3 sites for $5. It takes an entire day or a day and a half.
A must do. Incredibly informative in helping to understand the struggle of African Americans over a long period of time. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice is also worth visiting. Later in the day may be better for the visit as lots of school groups there detracted somewhat from the experience. But leave yourself lots of time.
Powerful! Such an amazing learning experience! A definite must see in Montgomery.
Great place with a lot of history, a very historic adventure awaits you if you visit the Legacy Museum.
It was highly emotional and educational on the background of afro American history. Our struggles thought history presented in an audio and visual
You can tell no expense was spared when constructing this beautiful, modern museum located in downtown Montgomery. Packed with top-notch interactive exhibits and informative history lessons, you will definitely learn a lot during your visit. The parking lot is very small, but you should be able to find street parking. There is a complimentary shuttle that will take you between the museum and the nearby Freedom Monument Sculpture Park (a MUST visit)! After I got through the museum I enjoyed a wonderful meal at a soul food restaurant located in the same building as the museum - yummy! Photos were not allowed to be taken in the museum. Legacy Plaza is nearby which is also beautiful and a nice place to sit and reflect.
The BEST African American History museum that I’ve ever attended! If you are looking for a beautifully appointed, well thought out exhibition of TRUTH, then this is it! The staff was professional, and I cannot say enough about the exhibits! The holograms broke me down emotionally because they were so REAL. The theater experiences reinforced the exhibits in each part of the museum. The reflection room has such wonderful energy! I considered myself very learned in all things black, yet I learned so much from this beautiful place. I highly recommend visiting because you will not be disappointed. EJI did an amazing job with this place! It is one of a kind!
This place was amazing! The creator of this museum deserves so many kudos!!
Wow, get ready for your heart to break and your blood to boil... so much venom and hatred oppressing God-breathed humans for so many centruies... how can anyone say we have and are living our American dream of equality and justice for all.But there is also so many glimpses of hope in the courage and strength in so many through the centures and today... we shall overcome someday.
Every person should visit here at least twice in their lifetime. It is an overwhelming and powerful experience that I enjoyed. It may give you ambivalent feelings. It's strange for a place to bring you so much joy and so much sorrow. Once your children are of age, you should definitely bring them. This museum is beautifully done.
What an incredibly beautiful display of how monstrous humans can be.
It was very educational. Learn a lot about parts of slavery I didn't know about.
This is an amazing experience for me and my family. It was so educational and emotional 😢 I will be back.
Life changing. Very sobering and left me in tears. I’ve always had an idea of what my ancestors went through but to see how we arrived on this country how we’ve been unjustly treated since the beginning of time brought me to tears. The museum blew me away. It was put together so nicely. So informative. I’ve learned more about my people from my visit then I ever did in school. The staff was amazing and very friendly. The food located at the cafeteria was really delicious. It does take a long time to complete the entire museum since it’s a lot of reading so just be prepared.
An awesome educational vacation for the family. Tons of relevant research based information provided by the outstanding work the Equal Justice Initiative continues to do. The riverboat ride to the sculpture park was great and the landscaping of the park is kept in pristine conditions. Mr. Stevenson's vision is very tangible in all 3 sites. Professional and courteous security on all sites thanks to Chief of Site Security, Andre Carlisle. Keep up the great Job! 👍🏽Checking out Pannie George's soul food, restaurant next to the museum is a must. Your taste palette will thank you! 😋😋
Definitely an experience. Prepare to read a lot but there are interactive video and experiences. The entrance into the museum with the sounds and visual was extremely profound for me. Worth a visit. However I will say the actual memorial, a few minutes aways was underwhelming. I think it would be m9re profound for a visitor that actually knows someone listed on the monument
This is an amazing museum. Showing the transgressions of African Americans from Slavery to Incarceration. Seeing how the evil moved through time, how it affected the world is fascinating to learn about. You’ll go through every emotion imaginable as you walk through this museum. Please take your time and read the material and feel your feelings while learning about history so we can better the future.
This has to be my top 3 favorite history museums. You learn so much and everything is in great detail. The people are very nice and super helpful. There's a 3 part series... you cannot take pictures inside but be prepared to take notes! I shed tears twice walking through & at the memorial (the shuttle takes you to). Pictures are free to take at the memorial, however. I plan on attending again to bring more people with me. They are non-profit and not supported by the state of AL so they can give the raw and real truth about America. So, I strongly encourage to give donations since admission is only $5.
