360 Baseline got in-depth with actor Alfred E. Rutherford as he discussed his role as Manny Halley in Lifetime’s Keyshia Cole biopic, Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story.
Halley, whom fans may know as Cole’s former manager who helped to catapult her success, Rutherford wasn’t aware of who he was prior to the audition.
“And I’m going to confess I did not know Manny Haley. Like that, my wife knows who Manny Haley was because again, she watched a reality show. I’m not a big reality show fan, so I didn’t really know.”
He also credited the singer who portrayed herself in the film saying, “I was really impressed.” The film was released on June 24.
However, that’s not all for Rutherford. The veteran actor starred alongside actress Keesha Sharp from STARZ’s Power: Book II Ghost and Girlfriends in the Hallmark rom-com Spring Breakthrough. The made-for-tv movie was directed by none other than actor Mykelti Williamson. Rutherford expressed his gratitude by saying,
“Working on this film was great. Working with the Director, Mykelti Williamson, was amazing,
I watched Forrest Gump, Waiting to Exhale and so many other classics. He’s a great guy
and it was a wonderful experience to be directed by him.”
As for how he sees himself as an actor, the NAACP nominee had a pretty interesting description,
“I see myself as a modern-day Paul Robeson and Sidney Poitier. They were so much more than actors; Their passion for community, activism, and politics has been a major inspiration for me and that’s how I feel, I try to display that through different expressions of art and the roles I play.”
