If you would have told designer Shannon Slack two years ago that her luxury shoe line would be featured during New York Fashion Week, she probably wouldn’t believe you. Believe it or not, Luna Selene was created only less than a year ago based on Shannon’s dream to create a handcrafted shoe line that was stylish, elevated, and comfortable for the everyday woman.

Designed in Pittsburgh, the Luna Selene brand is all about keeping the art of handcrafted shoes alive. Let’s be honest, mass production is not sustainable and could cause a brand to lose its intentionality and attention to detail. “Slow-batch” as Shannon phrases it, is a process of allowing the handcrafter to take their time in creating a shoe. The process is sustainable and allows her audience to wait in anticipation for the next batch of shoes to be released.

“We’re not pumping out shoes,” Shannon explained. “We do a fall line and a spring line. They [the shoes] are all handmade by craftsmen in Italy. We’re small. Even as we grow I always want to keep it handmade.”

Her goal is for every new collection to be better than the last — even if it’s the same design.

“I’m working to perfect everytype of shoe that I do. I want it to be perfect. I’m constantly asking customers for feedback. We try to perfect every shoe that we do, for the season change out maybe the print.”

The Luna Selene aesthetic is a nod to the 1950s and 60s. Shannon’s personal favorite era. She finds that time in fashion timeless and a moment when clothes were tailored to perfection. The name of each shoe pays homage to real or fictional women that were inspiring. For example, her sold-out Kitt Black Suede Bootie pays homage to Eartha Kitt’s character as Catwoman. Kitt, who died in 2006, was known for her role as Catwoman in the 1960s Batman.

New York Fashion Week will have its surprises. However, the new names are bringing it this year with originality. Every year, new designers are pushed to and tested to their limits only to exceed past them.

According to Luna Selene, the designs are based on retro and nostalgia for a specific taste,

“Luna Selene is an atelier of handcrafted footwear invoking the everyday elegance and timelessness of femininity. It is gliding through the office with effortless elegance. It is winning a high-stakes negotiation, and then care-freely meeting your partner for dinner and a movie. It is the glamour of the 1950s-60s, with the power of the 2020 woman. Step into our world of handcrafted elegance — heels made with perfection, timelessness, and quality.”
